Wings and rubber bands.
Alphonse Penaud made the first one in 1871
Lawrence Hargrave experimented with them in 1889
Octave Chanute wrote a book including them in 1895
Today it's an international competition involving people who devote a great deal of time and effort to making them. There is a documentary in progress.
