It's effectively a cell tower that fits in your hand... a "femtocell". Typically in the past, such a device would be used to create smaller cell tower networks, perhaps for a single office... like wifi, but for cell phones. Most femtocells have been much bigger than this.
Even though I work in the telecommunications industry, I'm way too low on the totem pole for the bosses to tell me anything. Everything I say is pure speculation, and I know nothing about company plans. That being said... this puppy would be PERFECT to create a wireless mesh network with.
Adding this capability to a FTTX router or ONT would make me a very happy nerd.
